From a distance…

Name of Pupil: Monna Lou Maldo, Online learner in China

It was the beginning of June and I was enrolled as a grade III student at Cebu International Distance Education College (CIDEC). At first, I was very, very nervous. I thought that online learning was embarrassing. But after a while I’m used to it and happy about it. I told my parents that I don’t like distance learning but then I realized distance learning is very nice. So I tried it. It went well. I have experienced many things by the computer and by my lessons. The first day had come. I was very lazy and trying to find out how things work. I introduced myself to my teachers and told them some things about me. Then during the conference, I was shivering and completely nervous but at the middle part, that’s a different story, I tried to on and off the microphone put it around my head and other things. My teachers taught me how to handle an online conference. I did as they told. I didn’t answer some of the activities though. My teachers told me that if you are ready for a conference, you should answer all of the activities and exercises.

After a year, I accomplished all my modules and requirements and later promoted to Grade IV. I know a lot of things by now. The lessons are going harder and harder but the good thing is, the lessons are repeated. But as I can say, it’s really going harder. I answered all the activities and exercises. In Math, some of the lessons are hard and some are easy. In English, I would say it is interesting and I could carry on. I love the stories and poems. Since I read many of them, I made some. In Filipino, it’s moderate. I can’t really understand Filipino well but since it’s our language, I will learn it. In Civics, I would say “nice” or “good”. I love reading things especially about our country. I like to read about the past of the Filipinos. How they look like. In Science, however, I tried my best on the exams. It’s very hard. Science is hard for me. Even if I tried my best, I still have a low grade in science but I’m going to get a medal in science someday.

I now realized that it doesn’t matter if others tease you about your studies as long you can finish them. I would like to continue home schooling till I reach high school. I wish every student or teacher who could read this a good luck on your school and jobs.

3rd National Conference

Worth keeping! I should say that the conference on Open and Distance Learning held last Feb. 23, 2007 at Traders Hotel, Manila, Philippines was an initial step in my DE endeavor as to be fully equipped and well polished when it comes to competencies. The spectacular presentations of each speaker embarked concepts and configurations. Further to say, it was a rare treasure since it had instilled facts, sets of standards and norms, and the panacea of an open and distance learning that were really beneficial for my teaching application in this ever growing CIDEC, a promising DE provider in this part of the region.
The chair of the 3rd National Conference on Open and Distance Learning (ODL), Dr. Nemah Hermosa, declared the conference opened at 9:00 in the morning on 23 February 2007. In her opening remarks, Dr. Hermosa stressed out the issue on making education available for all today by utilizing technology in an online and distance learning. She further explained that the 3rd Conference is meant to deepen our understanding of ODL creating a culture of excellence and equity in the country.
Dr. Grace Javier Alfonso, UPOU Chancellor, talked about the concepts of teaching, learning, connectivity, interactivity and socialization with the use of the appropriate technology during her keynote speech at the opening of the third Conference on Open and Distance Learning addressing the more than 350 participants.
She concluded that open and distance learning must be used to assure academic freedom, academic excellence, widening the access to quality education, the strengthening of the Filipino workforce and the betterment of tertiary education in the country to help construct a culture of Excellence and Equity in and through distance education for a more just, democratic and humane society.
Technologies and Media of Open and Distance Learning, Challenges Facing Higher Education, and Educational Policy Environment and the Shaping of ICT Learning Initiatives in the country were the three issues being presented in the Plenary I. Dr. Emmanuel Lallana, Commission on Information and Communication technology (CICT), presented technologies and media of Open and Distance Learning. Participants viewed Llana’s presentation as very informative, challenging and relevant as it addressed the needs to make learning more dynamic. Dr. Fred Lockwood of Mancheter Metropolitan University at UK discussed the issue on the Challenges Facing Higher Education and followed by the presentation of Dr. Zenaida Domingo that tackled on the Educational Policy Environment and the Shaping of ICT Learning Initiatives in the country.
I guess plenary II could be the exciting part of the conference since the Megastar Sharon Cuneta-Pangilinan struck most of the participants. Sharon said that despite of her hectic schedule as a star she could still engage herself to her studies in UPOU as an initial step towards her dream of obtaining a college degree. Fr. Gerard Ravasco, a graduate of the Master of Development Communication Program once quoted that ODL has leveled the playing field in education. Alvin Gatbonton, a current student of UPOU was a bit emotional because he was able to pursue his studies in ODL despite of his physical disability. After those testimonials, Dr. Felix Librero, UPOU, talked about School on the Air: An Infinitely Relevant Distance Learning Technology. Followed by a series of Video Episodes presented by Dr. Milagros D. Ibe and Dr. Grace Javier Alfonso.
I chose the parallel sessions 2 that tackled on the following issues:
(a) Mode of learning and Performance among students of DE by Dr. Victoria A. Bautista and Ma. Ana T. Quimbo. (b) Positive Student Response to eLearning Depends on Perceived Usefulness and Ease of Use by Nomar M. Alviar, UP Manila. (c) Process-Focused Quality Standards for Distance Education by Dr. Patricio C. Dionisio, Association of Christian Schools, Colleges and Universities.
The first day of the conference was a bit toughed for me since after our flight we had to have attended the conference. After that long day setting listening to the different speakers, I meditated and had a bit of reflections. Most of the participants have already been in the academe for how many years and poor me, just a greenhorn. [ laughs…!]
February 24, 2007, the second day. It was started with a plenary IV. Three issues were as follows: Management Perspective of ODL for Sustainable Development: Five Cases, Curriculum Development/Instructional design and Management of quality in Open and Distance Learning. Followed by the Plenary V that tackled on the National Policy Directions for Distance Education. Parallel Session 6 was the last session that I have attended.
Finally, Dr. Melinda F. Lumanta, UPOU Faculty, closed the program in a synthesis. Followed by the raffles wherein two participants won from CIDEC namely Madam Pureza Veloso, CIDEC President and Sheila Marie Ballenas, Accounting In-charge. Induction of Charter Members of the Philippine Society for Distance Learning, Inc. and Induction of Officers of the Philippine Society for Distance Learning, Inc. followed immediately.
Generally, I gained competence in both knowledge and skills initially during the conference. Allow me to extend my heartfelt thanks to the CIDEC administration for the opportunity given. It leaves a beautiful heartprint…
